A ma connaissance, elle n’est reliée à la rive gauche d’en face que par un pont, de même que Le Havre n’est relié à la rive gauche que par le Pont de Normandie. En d’autres termes, en cas de destruction du pont, unique point de ravitaillement, un corps expéditionnaire isolé dans la ville rive-droite risque d’être acculé et détruit. La position est donc extrêmement dangereuse, et il semble rationnel que l’armée russe ait renoncé à la défendre pour éviter la potentialité d’un désastre bien plus sérieux.
Mais cela illustre cependant que l’armée russe n’est pas en mesure de tenir l’armée de Kiev à suffisante distance ni d’interdire le bombardement du pont. Cela ne veut pas dire que l’armée russe n’eut pas été capable de défendre la ville dans une autre configuration géographique. Mais cela montre qu’elle n’était pas capable de le faire dans cette configuration sans prendre un risque potentiellement dramatique. C’est d’ailleurs cette question du pont qui a été évoquée dans le communiqué de retrait adressé à la presse russe, ainsi que les pertes potentiellement lourdes que la défense d’une telle position eut exigé.
Il faut attendre de voir si l’armée de Kiev est capable de franchir le Dniepr de vive force. Alors on pourra parler d’un véritable renversement du rapport de force militaire. Mais on n’en est là. Jusqu’à présent, l’armée russe a opéré le retrait de territoires difficilement tenables sans pertes importantes, mais n’a pas subi de défaite frontale. A ce stade, on peut parler de retraits tactiques. Par contre, si l’armée russe n’est pas capable de tenir le Dniepr, on pourra vraiment se poser des questions. Mais on a vu dans la région de la centrale atomique que la Russie a parfaitement tenu la position du Dniepr, malgré les tentatives de débarquement kiéviennes. A suivre donc...
Il faut voir que la Russie cherche à limiter les pertes dans des combats urbains non-essentiels. Son but essentiel est d’obtenir un traité avec Washington, et non de contrôler telle ou telle contrée, me semble-t-il.
