Diversity has a positive connotation, while the term communautarisme (the closest equivalent in English would be “identity politics“) retains a negative connotation. This is the idea that anything in the public space has to be neutral and that specific manifestations of one’s religious beliefs and one’s culture should be restricted to the private sphere. According to this standard, in France, the assertion of a minority identity is not considered as consistent with being integrated into French society and explains whymany immigrant groups may be hesitant to define themselves in ways other than French and integrated.
